OIL GLOSSARY

Argan: 

  • Argan oil is often called ‘liquid gold’, and is extracted from the kernels of the argan tree, which is native to Morocco. 
  • Uses: restores skin due to the high concentration of nutrients, including fatty acids and Vitamin E.

Bergamot (Citrus Bergamia):

  • Bergamot is a mainstay in Italian medicine ans has been used in the Middle East for hundreds of years.
  • Uses: calming; female hormonal support; mood-lifting; stress relief.

Black Pepper (Piper Nigrum):

  • In ancient times, pepper was considered as valuable as gold or silver. Indian monks were known to eat several black peppercorns a day to give them endurance during their arduous travels.
  • Uses: eases muscle discomfort and pain; soothes symptoms of arthritis.

Carrot Seed (Daucus Carota):

  • Carrot Seed has been traditionally used for various skin conditions (eczema, wrinkles, psoriasis); as well as digestive disorders. The use of carrots as a medicinal herb date back as far as 702 B.C., with recoding between 25 B.C. and 50 A.D. in the "De Medicina" by the Roman encyclopediest, Aulus Cornelius Celsus. 
  • Uses: revitalizes, tones, and heals skin; relieves water retention; detoxifies. 

Cedarwood (Cedrus Atlantica):

  • Cedarwood has been used for centuries in medicine, including both traditional medicine and incense in Tibet.
  • Uses: stimulates the pineal gland, which releases melatonin; balancing; calming. 

Clary Sage (Salvia Sclarea):

  • Clary Sage is native to the northern Mediterranean and has a long history as a medicinal herb.
  • Uses: calming; relieves stress; soothes PMS and menopausal symptoms.

Clove (Syzgium Aromaticum):

  • Clove buds has been used by healers in China and India since ancient times as part of their treatments. Clove oil is known to be a an oil used to protect people during the 15th century plague.
  • Uses: strengthens immune response; soothes physical aches and pains; eases symptoms of arthritis and rheumatism.

Fennel (Foeniculum Vulgare): 

  • Fennel has been used for centuries to support digestion and balance menstrual cycles. It is listed in one of the oldest known medical records, the Eber Papyrus (16th Century BC), an ancient Egyptian list of prescriptions and recipes.
  • Uses: supports the digestive system and women's hormonal balance; increases metabolism.

Frankincense (Boswellia Carteri):

  • Frankincense was considered more valued than gold in ancient times and was used to treat countless illnesses. It has also been used in religious ceremonies for years and is considered the "holy anointing oil" in the Middle East. It is listed in one of the oldest known medical records, the Eber Papyrus (16th Century BC), an ancient Egyptian list of prescriptions and recipes.
  • Uses: stimulates the limbic system of the brain (the center of memory and emotions) and the hypothalamus, pineal, and pituitary glands; supports skin health; spiritually grounding.

Helichrysum (Helichrysum Italicum):

  • Helichrysum has been used throughout history as an excellent traditional medicine and as a culinary plant used in various cultures. Sometimes called "everlasting" and "immortelle" to denote the eternal bliss and never ending health benefits of the oil.
  • Uses: relieves muscle tension; improves circulation; uplifting. 

Jasmine (Jasminum Officinale): 

  • Jasmine is also known as "moonlight of the grove" or "queen of the night," and has been treasured for centuries due to its beautiful fragrance. It has been used throughout history for romance and for balancing the feminine energy of the body. One pound of Jasmine oil requires about 1,000 pounds of Jasmine. 
  • Uses: uplifting; increases awareness and focus; decreases feelings of anxiety; balances energy.

Palo Santo (Bursera Graveolens):

  • Palo Santo meants "holy or sacred wood," and is considered a spiritual oil. It was used by the Incas to purify and cleanse the air of negative energies and is used by the Shamans of the Andes in ceremonies.
  • Uses: reduces inflammation; eases emotional pain and anxiety.

Peppermint (Mentha Piperita): 

  • Peppermint is known to be one of the oils used to protect against the 15th Century Plague and is often used to support digestion.
  • Uses: purifying; anti-inflammatory; pain relieving; digestive stimulant.

Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum Nobile):

  • Roman Chamomile has been used in Europe for skinregeneration. It has also been used for centuries to calm crying children and combat insomnia and stress.
  • Uses: supports skin conditions (acne, dermatitis, eczema); relieves restlessness & anxiety; relaxant.

Rose (Rosa Damascena):

  • Rose has been used in skin treatments for thousands of years. A single ounce of rose oil contains the essence of 40,000 rose blossoms. 
  • Uses: supports aging or dry skin; anti-inflammotory; reduces anxiety.

Rosehip Seed

  • Rosehip Seed oil is derived from the seeds of the Rosehip fruit, a wild plant that grows in Chile, it was often used by the Ancient Egyptians, Mayans and Native Americans for its healing properties.
  • Uses: restorative to skin and hair due to the high content of essential fatty acids (over 70% of the Rosehip seed is fatty acid) and vitamins and antioxidants, especially Vitamin C, Vitamin A (retinol), and linoleic and linolenic acids.

Rosewood (Aniba Roseadora):

  • Rosewood, also known as bois de rose, is a mighty evergreen tree indigenous to Brazil and Peru.
  • Uses: anti-bacterial; empowering and emotionally stabilizing.

Sunflower

  • Sunflowers are native to the southwest and have been used as food, medicine, and for ornamental purposes for generations
  • Uses: anti-aging and moisturizing; excellent source for beta-carotene, rich in Vitamin A, D, & extremely high in Vitamin E, rich in linoleic acid

Tulsi/Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum):

  • Tulsi is known as the "wonder oil." It is regarded in Ayurveda as a "elixir of life" and believed to promote longevity. It has been used for thousands of years for its diverse healing properties. 
  • Uses: boosts immune system; relaxing and calming to the body, mind and spirit. 

Tamanu

  • Tamanu oil is derived from the Tamanu nut and can only be harvested once per year. Once the nut is harvested, it must be allowed to dry in the sun for two months. After this process has been successfully completed, the oil can be extracted. Tamanu oil has been used for centuries by the people of Tahiti as a natural therapeutic and beauty aid and can now be found in other skin and cosmetic products in Europe and the U.S. due to its incredibly restorative properties.  
  • Uses: regenerates skin and heals scars, due to the presence of Calophyllic Acid.

Turmeric (Curcuma Longa):

  • Turmeric is highly regarded in Ayurveda for its use in food due to its medicinal value. Curcumin, the active ingredient in Turmeric, has been shown to have a wide range of therapeutic effects. It is also highly used in various Indian ceremonies. 
  • Uses:  muscle relaxant, reduces joint inflammation and pain, boosts immune system, reverses free radical damage

Wintergreen (Gaultheria Procumbens):

  • Wintergreen was used as a substitute for Black Tea during the Revolutionary War and has seen been incorporated into numerous linaments and ointments for musoskeletal probems. 
  • Uses: reduces inflammation, eases muscle aches and strains

Ylang Ylang (Cananga Odorata):

  • Ylang Ylang means "flower of flowers," and has been used for years in Indonesian wedding ceremonies. Spiritual practitioners claim the that users of Ylang Ylang are those who have been drawn to it, and who in turn, suit it. 
  • Uses: circulatory support; balances emotion; eases depression
